She Came to Us With a Folded Paper

Can AI Bridge the Health Literacy Gap for Immigrant Seniors?

Rosa carried a hospital discharge summary for four days — three pages of clinical language that explained her husband's heart failure to no one. That evening, and what it made me think, is where this research begins.

About This Project

What Is Clarity Bridge Health?

🎯

The Mission

Because everyone deserves to understand their health in the language they know best. ClarityBridgeHealth studies whether AI can translate complex medical documents into plain, accessible language for immigrant and non-English-speaking communities.

🔬

The Research

An independent study measuring whether AI-generated plain-language summaries of hospital discharge documents improve health comprehension among elderly adults who speak Spanish, Telugu, and Vietnamese — with real participants, real data, and transparent methodology.

👥

Who It's For

Elderly immigrant patients who leave hospitals with paperwork they cannot understand. Families who become impromptu translators. Communities where a language barrier between patient and provider can mean the difference between recovery and crisis.

Under ClarityBridge

This blog and research project runs under ClarityBridge, a student-founded nonprofit. All participant data is collected anonymously with full written informed consent. This site does not constitute medical advice.

Hi, I'm Lakshmi Laalasa Vinnakota

I'm a high school junior with a passion for healthcare, research, and using technology to help people better understand and navigate complex information. I created Clarity Bridge Health to explore ways to bridge communication gaps in healthcare and make medical information more accessible and understandable for everyone.

Beyond Academics

I'm actively involved in band and play the flute, serve as president of my school's STEMsters club, and enjoy cooking, art, and connecting with people from different backgrounds. I'm passionate about combining creativity, empathy, and innovation to make a meaningful impact in my community.

What Drives Me

I value kindness, respect, understanding, and helping others. I hope to use both research and technology to create solutions that truly make a difference — not just in theory, but for real people navigating real challenges every day.
